MOVIE REVIEW: Dead Man’s Shoes

4ktcli1

Released: 1 October 2004

Director: Shane Meadows

Cast: Paddy Considine ( Richard ) Gary Stretch ( Sonny ) Toby Kebbell ( Anthony ) Jo Hartley ( Jo ) Seamus O’Neil ( Big Al ) Stuart Wolfenden ( Herbie ) Paul Sadot ( Tuff ) Paul Hurstfield ( Mark )

Richard returns home from military service to a small town in the Midlands. He has one thing on his mind: revenge. Payback for the local bullies who did some very bad things to his brother. At first his campaign employs guerrilla tactics, designed to frighten the men and put them ill at ease. But then he steps up his operation, and one by one these local tough guys are picked off by the terrifying angel of vengeance that Richard has become.

I’ve come to the conclusion that Paddy Considine may well be one of the best actors of our generation. He’s definitely the best British actor – seriously, prove me wrong! Already highly impressed by him. He gives immensely powerful performances in ‘In America’, ‘24 Hour Party People’, ‘Cinderella Man’, ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’ and showing he can do comedy too in ‘Hot Fuzz’

However, it was his performance here as Richard that absolutely blew me away. Deservedly winning Empire’s best male performance award, Considine commands attention from every other. Playing a soldier who come backs to seek revenge on a group of thugs that have abused his younger mentally challenged brother. Richard starts of with almost childish pranks but then the terror escalates and we see the true menace.

Throughout the film, we see glimpses of what was inflicted on Richard’s brother Anthony, but it’s only at the end do we see the true horror of what happened. It’s akin to being sucker punched in the stomach emotionally. Disturbing, sad and it will stay with you for a while. Director Shane Meadows is known for his bleak unflinching drama and here he really pulls out the stops to leave us mentally drained.

This is what drama should be. You can keep your romances and tween story. I’ll take this – British film-making at it’s best. Highly reccommended
