MOVIE REVIEW: Pineapple Express

pineapple-express

Released: 12 September 2008

Director: David Gordon Green

Cast: Seth Rogen (Dale Denton) James Franco (Saul Silva)  Danny McBride (Red) Kevin Corrigan (Bludofsky) Craig Robinson (Matheson) Gary Cole (Ted Jones) Rosie Perez (Carol – female cop )

Lazy court-process clerk and stoner Dale Denton has only one reason to visit his equally lazy dealer Saul Silver: to purchase weed, specifically, a rare new strain called Pineapple Express. But when Dale becomes the only witness to a murder by a crooked cop and the city’s most dangerous drug lord, he panics and dumps his roach of Pineapple Express at the scene. Dale now has another reason to visit Saul: to find out if the weed is so rare that it can be traced back to him–and it is. As Dale and Saul run for their lives, they quickly discover that they’re not suffering from weed-fueled paranoia: incredibly, the bad guys really are hot on their trail and trying to figure out the fastest way to kill them both. All aboard the Pineapple Express.

Saul: It’s almost a shame to smoke it. It’s like killing a unicorn… with, like, a bomb.

One thing we need to get outta the way. James Franco : You So Would….

It’s Franco’s performance that makes a lot of the movie for me. His low level weed dealer Saul could easily have come across as a complete douche. Instead, it’s hard not to fall in love with Saul. He bundles along with a mixture of high intelligence and sweet naivety. Seth Rogen also puts in a gem of a performance. True, his character is not a stretch from those he’s played before – especially ‘Knocked Up’s Ben. The two form such a great duo you find yourself rooting for them with passion.

The film mixes some hilarious dialogue and truly laugh-out-loud set pieces – the fight at Red’s house and cop car chase being two of the highlights – with some real action shoot out and by the end is looking like something Michael Bay could have produced. You almost think you’re watching a serious action film then something will happen such as a slow-mo Dale walking from a building carrying Saul. In his pants.

The film has been described as a ‘Stoner Comedy’ but don’t let that put you none-smokers off. In short the film is funny as fuck. That’s high praise coming from a cynical sod like me. Now, I just need to get my hands on some of that Pineapple Express and I might be able to sit through anything….
